Tunnel closure – on the Acantilados de Los Gigantes

Klippenweg über die Acantilados

On a hike from Los Gigantes via the cliff path today, I noticed that massive doors are ready to close off the tunnel between the Acantilados de Los Gigantes and the Barranco Seco (see picture).

massive doors are ready to close off the tunnel
Building material before the tunnel

Then the popular hiking route “Double Tunnel Trip” will no longer be passable. However, I don’t know if it is a temporary closure due to construction work or if it is a permanent closure. If anyone knows more, I would appreciate feedback.

track of the hike double tunnel trip

As it seems that other tunnels in Barranco de Masca and Barranco Natero are also closed, the possibilities of the interesting Galeria and Canal walks in the region could be significantly reduced. If you encounter closed tunnels, please leave a comment here for other walkers. Then I can make appropriate comments on the individual walks. Thank you in advance for your help,

  1. Hello
We just did the tour last Saturday, 04.04.2021. we noticed the door as well, but it has not been installed yet.
So we did the double tunnel hike without any problems.
On that note I would like to 5hsnknyounfor your great website. I use it a lot as an inspiration for our hiking trips.
    Great job.

    1. Thank you so much Hanna for telling about the actual situation. I will there walk soon and see what had happened.

  2. Hi,
as of May 17 2021 door are build into entrance on both ends of the tunnel. Good part is they are wide open as for now.
Thanks for great tip for a hike, your posts are great inspiration for program on Tenerife.
BTW. I did perhaps the shortest possible Accantilago de Los Gigantes double tunnel variant, continuing through El Atajo de Victor and El Largo Tunnel. I did not find that on any post on internet and as there is no path on the map from the lower end of El Largo.
Turned out the get from El Largo to TF-PR-65 is no harder than other parts of the trip.

    1. Thanks for update description Vit

Gracias, Dagmar

        2. I’m not great at language of your tribe, but I think this is what you asked for:
          https://en.mapy.cz/s/lagumosuvo

          1. Yes, that it is, but this tunnel will be closed soon – the one on the cliff way

  3. Too bad. I am so glad I made all the tunnels and galerias a few times in the last years.
Challenging hikes for expirienced hikers, where you need to be surefooted and free from vertigo And stunning views over the coast.
And I loved to jump an run the Baranco trail once each time I’m on tenerife.
Now I’ve seen the new entry and the rules 2 weeks ago. I won’t go there again. It’s only sad for the Bar Blanky. I loved to sit there to finish the day.

    1. You are right – it is a shame. But up to now some tunnels are still open. Let s face, what the future brings

  4. We did the two tunnel walk Monday no problem with tunnels but the marking on the path wasn’t good

    1. Thanks for information – I was there last week – we will see what happens

  5. We were there yesterday (7-11-2021). Both tunnels are (still) open. We did the descent from El Molledo to Playa de Barranco Seco through the eponymous gorge. Then we took the lower tunnel that lead to the coastal route to Los Gigantes. Very beautiful hike!! Good alternative instead of Masca, now you need a permit and at the moment of wrijving it is only possible during the weekends.

Note 1: Though at the end of the route in Los Gigantes (from there a starting point) we saw a big sign that the coastal route is officially closed. But many people (with sure-footedness and without fear of heights) still do this route and it’s worth it.

Note 2: The higher tunnel to Taimaimo we didn’t ourselves, but other hikers told us this one is open too. And that there was a third tunnel too (?) and this one was also open.

    1. Thank you for the information – I was there (both tunnels and channel pass) last Saturday – it seems, that there is work on the tubes in the moment and everything is open. Let´s see, how it will go on.

Does anyone know whether the tunnels are open now? Visit febr 22
    Thanks Fokke (Netherlands)

    1. Until today most of the tunnels are open, but the lower tunnel from Tamaimo is blocked from a bar owner:https://siebeninseln.de/en/up-to-date/bar-operator/ and the water tunnel at Cuevas Negras is closed:https://siebeninseln.de/en/up-to-date/tunnel-closure/

  8. Very disappointed to find the first tunnel from Los Gigantes locked. Never the less a wonderful 2 hours of walking. Would be good to get an official comment on this from the authorities who closed it.
Thanks for bringing all this together on your most informative web-page.
    Best Wishes Graham Boswell UK

    1. Thanks Graham for information. What do you mean with first tunnel? The tunnel on the cliff way or the Tamaimo tunnel?

Tamaimo is “opened”, except for the awkward situation with awkward guy at the gate, who wants 10 euro for pass. Graham, can you confirm that lower tunnel is totally closed? I was going to go there tomorrow with my kid and wouldn’t disappoint him…

On the 20th of February, I took the path from Los Gigantes going north along the cliffs, and passed through the tunnel closest to the sea. Then went up through the valley along Barranco Mancha de Los Diaz and returned to Los Gigantes through the Tamaimo tunnel. However, when reaching the end of the tunnel, I was met by a closed gate guarded by a civilian-dressed guy. I refused to pay the 10 euro he requested, and he eventually let me through. I went to a nearby house where “tickets” could be purchased, but ticket seller did not have any papers documenting that he had any rights to charge money for entering the tunnel, so I did not pay.

    1. Thanks for coming along here – since some days the tunnel is open again 🙂

  11. Just walked the Tamaimo tunnel. The iron gate was not attached to its hinges and no strange guy asking for 10 euro ?

  12. Status October 2022: The cliff tunnel and the middle Tamaimo tunnel are closed. The lower and upper Tamaimo tunnels are “still” open. I look forward to receiving up-to-date information.

  13. As of late March 2023 the cliff tunnel is open, I found the climb to it too dangerous, perhaps I took the wrong way… I couldn’t find the entrance to the first Tamaimo tunnel from the village’s side. The second Tamaimo tunnel’s doors are broken open on both sides, there are warnings on a digital screen at the entrance of toxic fumes amongst other lethal risks. There is a chicken coop right next to it and a building marked as “ticket office” on maps.me. I saw that the 3rd tunnel was open from the Barranco’s side, did not check it from the village’s.

Today May 24, the cliff tunnel was closed from the Barranco side. We went up through the east Tamaimo tunnel, and returned through the middle Tamaino tunnel. There were no people charging money, but a woman with 2 children living in the broken down building. A bit strange. Also, the gate was only partially open, so not easy for big people to get through.
We also verified that the western Tamaino tunnel is open on both sides. This took quite a challenging walk following the water tube from the eastern tunnel to the western tunnel and a steep rocky decent, but very interesting nonetheless.

    1. Thanks Tim and Hilde for sharing actual information

  15. Do you mean that now you can reach Barranco Seco only from Santiago del Teide?

    1. No, there a still some ways over the mountains from Tamaimo to Barranco Seco. And in the moment three tunnels are not closed – as far as I know.

    1. Thank you for the comment. The description of the middle Tamaimo tunnel is correct. Also that the beach is closed from February to August because of nesting birds. This sign is there all the time. It is also correct that the tunnel onto the cliffs is closed. However, the other Tamaimo tunnels are still open at the moment.

  17. I know about 7 tunnels and one tunnel-system with ca. 20 small tunnels in this area. All of these are shown on http://www.mapy.cz. Make sure you set it to “Outdoor” and you can see all tunnels and entrances. For all I know there might be more, as Mapy.cz is lacking in other parts of Teno where there are tunnels not shown. I see only some of those are mentioned here, so I wanted to write to maybe clarify for someone wanting to explore the area. There are 4 tunnels going into the first barranco: Barranco Mancha de Los Diaz (Often referred to as Barranco Seco) out of which only the two tunnels (high and low) from Tamaimo are currently open. From there there is a high tunnel going into the next barranco, and there is a lower tunnel system also going into the next barranco, which is Barranco Seco/Natero/Sauce depending on what map/part. It still confuses me a bit where and what the name is, but I am referring to the second barranco after Tamaimo/Los Gigantes. The high tunnel has been cut open by some blessed soul and is accessible by using the top Tamaimo tunnel and simply following the water channel with white sediments until you reach the next tunnel. The lower tunnel system (20 tunnels) I have seen described as “Las ventanas de Barranco Seco” is closed after the third tunnel coming from Barranco Mancha de Los Diaz. If you were to walk the cliff path or the channel from Los Gigantes, use the tunnel (now closed and cant be used), got into the first barranco and continued along the water channel, you would eventually get to this tunnel system. Say you use the upper tunnels to get into the second barranco, from there there are also two tunnels, one high in the barranco and one in the middle in the barranco, that goes into Barranco de Masca. The one at the top is very closed and the one in the middle I have not checked yet. I dont know if or at what point the lower tunnel system is closed at that side of the barrancos either, as I have yet to explore it. There seems to be a way to circumvent the tunnel closure on “Ventanas de Barranco Seco”, using a metal tube further down in the barranco to connect to it after the closure. It looked a bit too adventurous for me and my energy levels that day, so I have yet to try that. If anyone knows more about this shortcut, the northern entrance to the “Ventanas de Barranco Seco” or the southern entrance to the lower tunnel to the Masca ravine I would be grateful for any recent information.

Looks like all of this was open 9 months ago as seen here in this video of a 25km route from Los Gigantes to Barranco de Masca using the cliff path, tunnel, ventanas de barranco seco and then back again the same way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQVtsAK8650

Of course you have to be very careful when exploring routes like this and take all the necessary precautions. It is important to note that there is a crucial difference between tunnels and water galleries. Tunnels do have airflow through them because they have two openings, which galleries do not. They just stop at a certain water saturated point, from where they collect water, which can be many kilometers inside of a mountain. Kilometers one would now have to walk back. Now they should all be closed as per government regulation, but in fact some are still open and some are completely unmarked.

    1. Thanks for the actual information Arvid – I am sure, that people will appreciate it

  18. Any status update on the gate?

Did the cabildo just like that destroy, quite literally, one of the most glorious hikes on this planet?

  19. Hi,
Today did LosGigantes to Cliff tunnel and then back through first tunnel.
Many people going so go while its open.
Must see. Top 5 hike ever.

  20. Today we went from Tamaimo through the eastern tunnel to the barranco secco, and back through the cliff tunnel to los Gigantes. We tried the middle Tamaimo tunnel but it was closed with a newish looking gate door.

In summary: eastern Tamaimo tunnel open, middle Tamaimo tunnel closed, western tunnel unknown, cliff tunnel open.

    1. That you can read in the beginning of each article – read letters

  21. Went on the double tunnel hike on the 7th of January 2024 from the opposite direction (starting from the Santiago deal Teide route and ending with the cliffs). The first largest tunnel was closed with the massive doors so we went over the mountain. The tunnel was open from the other side! Which I think is very dangerous as if you went in from the other side you would have to return all the way back.
The second smaller runner next to the cliffs was open

    1. there are 4 tunnels – three should be open
